One of the longest-running WWII video game series is Medal of Honor.  The games have been a hit for over a decade now, taking people to classic battles on land, sea and air.

There’s another video game series that started out as a WWII-based series.  They call it Call of Duty.  You may have heard of it.  These days, it’s moved into the Modern Warfare series and makes more money than poop has stink.  Well, folks, it’s time for Medal of Honor to hop on that bandwagon and create their first installment reflecting battle in Afghanistan due out in Fall 2010.

A recent press release from EA  begins by saying…

Medal of Honor™ returns to the front lines, this time in today’s war. For the first time in the franchise’s 10-year history, Medal of Honor is leaving the WWII theatre and putting players in war-torn Afghanistan. Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today revealed that in 2010, Medal of Honor, an all-new first-person shooter game, will introduce the Tier 1 Operator: a relatively unknown entity directly under the National Command Authority who takes on missions no one else can handle. The development team has been working closely with Tier 1 Operators from the U.S. Special Operations Community since the earliest stages of development to create the most authentic modern war experience. Inspired by real events, Medal of Honor reveals the mission of today’s most elite American soldier – his will, his mindset and his uncompromising professionalism.”

The attempt is to “reinvent” Medal of Honor – staying true to its roots, its image, and its dedication to the soldier, but moving the situation to the modern war.  Personally, I fully feel that there are quite enough World War II games.  It is rather obvious, though, that EA is doing this in respose to Modern Warfare’s insane success.  The press release’s headline was “EA Goes to War with Medal of Honor,” after all.  War with Infinity Ward, perhaps?  Sweet – bring it on.

Medal of Honor titles have fallen by the wayside in recent years, so it’ll be interesting to see how their game stacks up against the precedent now set for scenarios taking place on a present-day battlefield.
