Most of the reviews we’ve done here are games, but I think it’s time we got started with some accessory reviews as well. MobileFun is a company based out of the UK and they carry mobile stuff like phones and accessories. They also carry game related products so they sent me over a nice little, inexpensive starter kit for the Xbox360 for review. It’s aptly named the Xbox 360 Starter Pack and it includes a nice long HDMI cable, full sized headset and a remote that is similar to the Xbox one but only smaller. The price is about $30, so that’s basically $10 for each part of the pack and that’s not a bad price really. So read on to learn more…

The Review:

We’ll start off with the unboxing video:

The HDMI cable doesn’t come in any special package, none needed really. It seems well made, it is nice and thick. The cable is 79 1/2 inches long from tip to tip which is over six feet in length. The length should be long enough for most any installation situation you’ve got.

I couldn’t find any information on the cable itself, but I believe it’s a V1.3 HDMI cable. It does have the gold plated connections on the ends though.

There are markings on it but I couldn’t really find a reference to them anywhere.

The main number is E206165 which I could not find, the other numbers refer to fire ratings, temperatures and styles etc. The UL number is 20276 which tells me that it’s made by Xinya but that’s about all I know.

The first remote packaging picture I took didn’t work, out of focus and all that, so I had to stick it back in the open package, you get the idea though:

Here’s the remote out of the box:

It does resemble the official Xbox remote, just smaller and missing the number pad section on the bottom along with missing the volume and channel controls. The missing stuff doesn’t bother me at all as I never used those buttons anyway.

It works very well, I had no issues with it. I have the Xbox HD-DVD player, and yes I own HD-DVDs as well, and I sometimes use the Xbox as my DVD player but it works to control other things as well.

One thing I do not like about this remote is that it is not backlit like the original Xbox remote is.

Here’s a comparison shot with the original remote:

Now onto the headphones. They come packaged in the plastic clamshell style box:

The headphones have two speakers unlike the set that comes with some Xbox consoles.

starter14

The ear pieces are very well padded making them very comfortable.

starter17

The headband is adjustable so it should fit anyone with no issues.

starter18

The microphone is flexible and adjustable, the actual microphone piece is rather large though. I should note that even though it is flexible it is stiff enough to stay where you put it when you get it adjusted the way you want it.

starter16

It connects to your controller just like any other headset does. The connection has a volume control on it along with a switch to enable or disable the microphone.

starter15

Here is the headset attached to my controller:

Sound quality is decent overall, I have to say that it’s better than the official small Xbox headset. It’s certainly more comfortable with those nice padded ear pieces.

The cable is nice and long so you can put some distance between you and the controller and not worry about having the headset pulled from your head.

I do have a small problem with the headphones, I do not like the very thin cable that it comes with. I’m just afraid I’m going to break the cable, but it seems to be fine, it’s just like the cable on the official Xbox headphones and I haven’t broke that yet….

Conclusion:

Personally I think is a pretty good kit really especially for the price. The total cost without shipping is a few cents short of $30 making each piece cost about $10 each. The remote alone could easily sell for $20 and so could the headphones I’m sure, so getting all three in one package is a good deal.

The problems or cons for this pack aren’t that major, more personal preferences that anything, but I had to point them out.

PROS CONS
- Inexpensive for all three things included.
- Remote is nice and small and works well.
- HDMI cable is long enough for most installations
- No backlighting on remote.
- Headphone cable is very thin!
