Big news for 2K Games today.
MLB 2K11 will feature the return of the much anticipated million dollar Perfect Game Challenge. “I don’t know if we’re smart or just insane,” said Jason Argent, the vice president of marketing for 2K Sports. “The million-dollar bounty’s back. I just walked out of a meeting with our chief financial officer; budgeting for this sort of thing is a bit of a challenge when you can’t say exactly when you’re going to pay it.” The mode was first introduced as a way to show off the new pitching mechanics that was one of the main headlines of MLB 2K10. With Roy Halladay as the cover athlete it only makes sense. True to form though, Halladay had his had his own personal touch on the contest this year. “When we finished the deal to put him on the cover and were talking with him about the game, the first thing he said was, ‘Man, you’ve got to change that perfect game contest,’” Argent stated. “He said, ‘My son is going crazy trying to throw a perfect game and win a million dollars, and I didn’t have the heart to tell him he was ineligible because he was too young last year.’” New rules will be in effect for this year. The age of the contest has changed to 13 from 18 years old last year. The first day of eligibility has been moved back from launch date to April 1rst, one day after the season opener, to better promote the Authentic Presentation feature.
Last year’s winner, Wade McGilberry, seemed like a story out of Hollywood. McGillberry won on the first day of the contest using the spring training roster of the Atlanta Braves. McGilberry used Atlanta Braves pitcher Kenshin Kawakami, to earn the million dollars. Kawakami finished the 2010 regular season with a 1-10 record and a 5.15 ERA. McGilberry used the money to pay off his mortgage and start a family.
In addition to the announcement of the return of the challenge 2K Sports released a new gameplay trailer for MLB 2K11. Featuring all of Major League Baseballs major stars, 2K11 touts a brand new improved fielding engine in the game. With exciting dives in the outfield and behind the back throws, 2K11 looks to bridge the gap between real life and simulations. Featuring all new player models, MLB 2K11 looks to be the best game in the series yet. MLB 2K11 is not yet rated by the ESRB and will be available on March 8, 2011 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation2, PSP, Wii, and Windows PC.
